“And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are but the beginning of the birth pains.”

Jesus prepares us for a shaking world
In Matthew 24, Jesus does not hide the reality that the world will walk through cycles of deep shaking. Wars, rumors of wars, famines, and earthquakes are not surprises to Him; they are part of the story He already knows. When believers today see headlines filled with conflict and crisis, they are stepping into a world Jesus described long before any modern nation existed. His words remind us that history is not random; it unfolds under His sovereign eye.
See that you are not alarmed
One of the most striking commands in this passage is simple and direct: “See that you are not alarmed.” Jesus does not say the events will be small or easy. He says that even as the world shakes, the hearts of His people are not called to live in panic. Fear is not the only possible response to global turmoil. For the follower of Christ, there is a deeper anchor: the certainty that none of these events fall outside His knowledge or His plan.
The end is not yet
Jesus adds a crucial phrase: “but the end is not yet.” Wars and disasters are not the final word; they are birth pains. Birth pains are real, intense, and sometimes overwhelming, but they point toward something beyond themselves. In the same way, the shaking of this age points toward the day when Christ will return and make all things new. The believer is invited to read the times, not with naive optimism, but with a sober hope rooted in the promises of God.
Between fear and faith
Every headline invites the heart to choose a foundation. Some will build on fear, constantly scanning news feeds and imagining the worst. Others will build on denial, pretending nothing is wrong. Scripture offers a different path: a sober awareness of the times, anchored in the unchanging character of God. In seasons of instability, Matthew 24:6–8 calls believers not to escape reality, but to face it with a steady trust in the One who already told us these things would come.
How should we respond today?
The call of this passage is not to calculate dates or decode every event, but to stay awake spiritually. In a world that is easily shaken, believers are invited to return again and again to the words of Jesus, allowing His voice to be louder than their fears. Watching the nations rage can either exhaust the soul or drive it deeper into the presence of God. Matthew 24:6–8 urges the church to live alert, rooted, and ready—confident that Christ has not lost control for a single moment of history.
